Dear Mr. President

What do you think you are doing? America would like to know.

Dear Mr. President

Hello, Mr. President!

I hope you have enjoyed your first week in office. You have been very busy it seems. Everyday this week I have checked the news and low and behold, there is your bright, shining, badly spray-tanned face. You have signed some seemingly extreme executive orders this week. I wouldn't have a problem with this except you have said very little for once. You just sign these orders and that's it. I, like most Americans, would like some answers. Without answers, we are left to assume. In the case of assumption, we all, except those that back you, are going to assume the worst. I cannot deny that within this past week you have evoked some passionate anger in me.

With regards to you stripping millions in funding for organizations that provide a multitude of health resources for women, I understand that abortion has been a Republican topic of argument since the start of time it seems. However, I need to remind you that since the 70s, Roe v. Wade, as determined by the Supreme Court of the United States, has determined that it is a woman's choice. Now with that being said, I understand both sides of the debate. But I am sick and tired of my uterus and billions of other women's being a part of your legal battles. Of all the issues the United States needs to focus on, healthcare, a debt plan, education, clean water, reproductive rights should not be on your table. You can have your beliefs as to which side of the debate you take, but it is legal. That does not mean that you have to get one. It just means the resource is available to those that choose to do so.

Now, what you signed on Monday denies resources to millions of women world wide. I question why. I am going to pull a famous quote from one of my favorite shows, Friends, where Rachel famously says " No uterus, no opinion." If you haven't watched the show, I highly suggest it. It may bring some happiness to your seemingly cold heart. Not only have you probably raised the global abortion rate, but these women are going to put themselves in immediate danger and possibly cause great harm to themselves. I know you don't care. Maybe you would care if it was your daughters in the position. But as history has shown, you are seemingly incapable of putting yourself in other people's shoes. As I am in college working to earn my degree, caring and offering of one's self is one of the very first things they teach us in nursing school. If we expect our nurses to have those values, I would surely hope that the President of the United States would hold the same values.

There is also speculation about you cutting funding for the arts, such as PBS and NPR. You want to make them privatized. Now, as a lover of the arts, this infuriates me. I can understand this on an economic level. If you are using this to make budget cuts, fine I guess. I still don't like it. However, you aren't doing that. You are doing it so that everything we hear will be what you want us to hear. It sounds to me like you are controlling and a tinge paranoid if you ask me.

So in one week, you are stripped funding for women's health globally, possibly cutting funding for the arts, stopping immigrants from entering this country, and now, NOW, you want to institute your beloved wall. Are you sick in the head, man? Did you ever take a history class? Ever hear of the wall in Berlin? Yeah, not a good idea. Causing division is the last thing we need. If anything, we need something that is going to bring us together. Currently that is opposing you. Riddle me this, Mr. President, where is that money going to come from? I refuse to pay for something that is so discriminatory. Immigration is an issue that needs to be looked at. That I agree with. However, in looking at it, I would not say that our solution is to build a wall. I would say we need to reform our citizenship process. I understand that illegal immigration is a problem. I will not deny that. My first thought however would not be to build a wall sectioning off North America from Mexico. Another solution needs to be put in place. One that is less extreme. One that solves the issue of jobs yet allows people to come into this country and have a fair chance.

Last but not least, let's talk about waterboarding and torture. Again I am going to ask, have you heard of ethics? And if you have, the word waterboarding didn't set off 20 different alarms in your head? You realize that even if you do torture something, there is a higher chance of them telling you what you want to hear rather than telling you the truth, right? I don't want to live in a nation where that is the most advanced tactic we have to combat issues. We have powerful, intelligent minds in this country that given the chance can solve your issues without violating ethics.

Mr. President, I understand some of things you are signing are part of campaign promises. That is how politics work. I don't think it is right but at the end of the day that is politics. However, I hope that throughout your term that you spread love and acceptance, not hate and negativity. Given that you ran your entire campaign on hate and negativity, I know that is probably wishful thinking. I want you to succeed. I want you to make this world a better place. You and your choices are making that quite hard for me to believe that at the moment. I understand that with power comes great responsibility, please I urge you to use it wisely. I want to leave you with some food for thought. It is found in Leviticus chapter 19 verses 33-34 .

" When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God."

College is filled with many things, and we're so often lectured to make the right decisions as we head out on our own into the college life. But sometimes it's necessary to indulge in some guilty pleasures as well as just doing things because you can. And honestly, a lot of the time it's inevitable. College is no piece of cake that's for sure, so it's okay to do some things you deep down know you shouldn't....once in a while anyways.
