An Open Letter To My New College Friends

We don’t meet people by accident. They are meant to cross our path for a reason.

An Open Letter To My New College Friends

Now even though my college experience hasn’t gone the way I anticipated, you have lived up to every expectation. In the short time that I have known you, you have taught me so much that I didn’t know I needed. We had our friends from high school that we had known for years, that we already felt comfortable with, and that we could be ourselves with all day long. So, I understand how scary it was to have to start fresh.

There are people that you meet and are “friends” with, civil with, but then there are those other people that you meet and can automatically be as weird as you want without being judged. Thank you for letting me be myself and accepting who that is. We may come from different backgrounds and our paths may or may have crossed but I am glad that we both ended up here.

While life has had its challenges already, you, have kept me sane through it all. You have been there for me and allowed me to be myself no matter what. You have invited me over when I had nothing else to do and come when I invited you just to hang out. You’ve listened to my random rants and problems already, and we have only known each other for a few months. Even though we’ve been friends for a short time, I couldn’t imagine life without you, and I feel like we have been friends forever.

I can’t wait to start planning our “typical college experience” and for us to have experiences and adventures. Sometimes, the friends you go to college with, from high school or even from life, aren’t your friends, after a few weeks or months, and that sucks. But, I am glad that you are the ones that chose to be my friend when they didn’t.

People say that the friends you meet in college are the friends you have for the rest of your life, and I am so excited for you to prove that right.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
