A Letter To Myself | The Odyssey Online

Dear Readers,

Have you ever thought about sitting down and writing yourself a note? I think doing so helps me because I am sitting here letting the one person who knows me best write down whatever they want about me. I honestly have no clue what I am going to write myself; I guess that just all depends on my mood and my music playing at the time. Let's get started.

Letter for Ruby Ansley Raines

Well here we are in your room on a Sunday. I don’t really know where to start with this… Well I do know you have had a great life for a 19-year-old. Coming from yourself, I see you as an extraordinary person who is blessed beyond measure. You have been through so much and you have made it through life events, even when you thought you would not.

Growing up with you so far has been a challenge for everyone, because you aren't always nice. You had moody tendencies. Sometimes your actions would confuse me, but I knew you always knew what was best for yourself.

I have never trusted anyone as much as I trust you. Sometimes I even doubted you, but you proved to me that you were stronger than what people perceived you to be. Now I can’t say that I always liked you, but I knew what you were going through. You have seen death in your family, you have felt the immense pain of heartbreak and what toll it takes on your body and you have felt depression. These things have brought you to your knees. And even though you give your friends advice about these moments in life, you have yet to take your own advice.

You are a difficult person.

But Ansley, you have seen more sunshine than rain. You have seen life with the birth of your nephew, you have made memories with great friends, you have experienced Christmas with hot chocolate and movies. You are a strong, beautiful lady and there are going to be times when you do not think that. There are going to be times where you think you're fat, ugly, and bad, times where you aren’t going to be able to go on any longer.

But remember that you are what you let yourself become. You deserve love, happiness, success and a bright future. The only one who will ever stop is you. Remember you have felt love, happiness, success and you have made it to the future from your 16-year-old self. There is so much to learn about who you are and who you are becoming, and I am here with you every step of the way.

Love, Me <3

“She’s gonna learn that this life will hit you, hard, in the face, wait for you to get back up so it can kick you in the stomach. But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air. There is hurt here that cannot be fixed by Band-Aids or poetry, so the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn’t coming, I’ll make sure she knows she doesn’t have to wear the cape all by herself. Because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers, your hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal. Believe me, I’ve tried.” – Sarah Kay, poet

College is a crazy, beautiful, amazing whirlwind. It is highly popularized in television and movies, but not necessarily in the most accurate way. Yes, there's frats, dingy dorms, raging house parties—but there's also a lot that people fail to mention.

1. If you thought that you knew how to study, you're wrong.

All of your classes aren't taught every day, so professors aren't on your case constantly about reading and memorizing material. Once you get back that "questionable" first exam grade, you'll kick it into high gear and figure out what works for you

Girl With Bleached Hair

I've been a bleach blonde for over a year now, and let me tell you, it is a lifestyle. More hair appointments, longer showers, and special shampoo. But it is totally worth it!

1. Mentally preparing yourself to convince your hair dresser that white is the way to go.

2. Or the anxiety of what could go wrong by bleaching your hair at home.

3. You could either become a ginger

4. Or a pixie

5. The face you make in the mirror when you take off your towel to unveil the perfect white strands.

6. Taking a million selfies the day you bleached it, because you know your roots will be back in literally 2 days.

7. Having to get bangs or a big chop because your hair is so damaged.

8. Having orange highlights in between touch-ups.

9. Going out for a drink afterwards to debut your updated look.

Despite the struggles, you love your platinum blonde hair! You make sure Instagram knows it, too. You don't need a filter, because the color is flawless by itself!

Finals: just thinking about them gives you anxiety. Only two weeks separate you from summer, but they're the longest of the semester. There's a familiarity to this season, now that you have had so many testing cycles under your belt. But that doesn't quell the ever present stress to pass your finals and your classes. Even better, as a package deal during these wonderful weeks, you get to wake up early to study and you get to take exams that can begin anytime from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. Now that we have established that this week is not fun, here are some super relatable moments that punctuate finals week.

I've been at this college thing for almost three and a half years, and while I thought that high school was truly the lowest point of my existence, I'm beginning to realize that it was a walk in the park. Like, I miss the days when the biggest white lie I told my parents was my made up excuse about being late for fourth period. These days, the white lies are a tad more complex, and as ashamed as I am to admit it, I've definitely told a few of these.
