A Letter To All High School Seniors

A Letter To All High School Seniors
Jody Shawley

To the high school class of 2017,

It's your senior year, and with that, comes an abundance of emotions. I'm sure some of you are so excited for the school year to end and to move on to bigger and better things, while others are probably freaking out because they have no clue what they're doing tonight, let alone the next four years. That's okay, and here's why.

First, I want to say the cliche phrase that everyone else has probably told you. Cherish your last year. Yes, life after high school is SO much better, but there are also tons of responsibilities and decisions you have to make, in a timely manner. Savor every senior night you participate in, ever choir or band concert, and every pep-rally. Nothing compares to following the band through the hallways of high school, even if it does get boring after a while. Once you get to college, you know almost no one, and it can be kind of scary. Relax and be happy that you do know quite a few people from your high school.

Next, I want to remind you that it is okay if you have no idea what you want to do. My entire senior year, I thought I wanted to pursue a certain major. Wrong. I got to college, started classes, and decided that I do not like it at all. I haven't even completed my first semester in college, and I already plan to change my major. It happens to a majority of people, it is okay. Over 50 percent of college students change their major at least once, sometimes more. Relax.

Lastly, please mature. Personally, I see mature growth in tons of people over the summer between high school and college...and that's good. College is a little more serious than high school. You need to learn balance, time management, GOOD stress management, and study habits. Looking over a paper, once, right before a big exam, is not going to help you. Make flashcards, write everything down, more than once, and read. You think that you'll be okay and don't need to study, but please study. Don't let your grades suffer because you didn't listen to other college students or professors with experience.

Reminisce on your memories from elementary to high school. Go crazy at your last homecoming and prom. Look nice. Get good grades. Participate in a lot. Whatever you do, savor your last year of high school, but look into the horizon. The future has so much waiting for you. Take the time to look into what you want to do, what your interests are, and what you have fun doing. You never know, there could be a path for you to take. Last but not least, have fun. Have so much fun that you have a great answer for every terrible college ice-breaker they offer.

"Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire."

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
