A Letter to a High School Senior from a soon to be College Senior

College is not as scary as it seems! I promise.

A Letter to a High School Senior from a soon to be College Senior

It's the summer before you begin college. You've finally made that decision that everyone is endlessly asking you about. Whether you've decided to stay in state or venture out on your own, you've been awkwardly Facebook messaging future roommates, buying XL Twin bed sheets, and trying not to think about leaving behind all of your beloved high school friends.

Going into my senior year of college, I can remember that summer so vividly. The nostalgia was overwhelming, even though I hadn't even left yet. But if I could go back and do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I am so grateful for the advice that everyone gave me when I was about to leave on the greatest adventure of my life. Here are some of the best pieces of advice that I could offer anyone who is about to embark on this crazy insane and wonderful journey.

Meet as many people as you can!

Everyone always says that you'll never stay friends with all the people you meet at freshmen orientation. For me, this was absolutely true. For some of my other friends, it was not. It all depends on who you meet! But either way, MEET PEOPLE! Socialize! Get out there and do everything! Whether or not these people will be your friends for the rest of your life, they are going to be people who you share crazy fun experiences with for the first few weeks of college, and they will more than likely introduce you to other friends, who will introduce you to other friends, who might just become your lifelong firends!

College is the best place to come out of your shell

What you did in high school no longer defines you. You are no longer with people who have known you since kindergarten. This is the best possible time and place to truly discover who you are and BE YOURSELF! It sounds cheesy, but I can safely say for myself and any of my peers that we are nothing like who we were when we came in to college! And I couldn't feel better about it.

Have fun and make memories

This is one case where I would say to say "YES" as often as you can! Late night adventure to Sonic? Heck yeah! Night hike up the hill near campus? Don't need to ask me twice! Going to check out Greek life or the new club on campus? Absolutely! Commit yourself to clubs or athletics or activities, and enjoy them! You will be surprised to find that you may have undiscovered passion for an activity!

Do what you LOVE

Overall the most important thing I have taken away from my college experience is to FOLLOW YOUR PASSIONS. Discover what makes you giddy and excited and enthusiastic, and DO THAT! Whether it's a sport your involved in, an internship that you have, a position in your Greek house, don't worry about what everyone else is doing, or what you "should" do, do what you're passionate about!

Embrace the experience! This all might sound cheesy, but the best thing you can do is to not let college slide by you without making a few unforgettable memories!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
