A Letter To My High School Self

When you think about what you wish you knew before.

Right now, you're probably stressing yourself out over a seemingly pointless set of math equations or making an excessive number of flashcards for French in the hopes that you'll get that 'A' on the next test. Or maybe you're still in your freshman year, wondering to yourself how the heck you're supposed to balance all this work with a social life. I'm here to let you know that you shouldn't worry so much. You'll get a good grade, you'll have friends, you'll manage it; and if you don't sometimes, it is not the end of the world.

Take this from someone who's already lived this. You may not get the best grade all the time, but Mom and Dad just want you to try your best. That guy may not like you back, but you're going to find someone who does. You may not like that teacher, but they aren't your worst enemy. I promise because I've survived it.

There are definitely going to be days when you don't want to get out of bed because you have that presentation, or you don't want to finish that 20 page review packet, so you think about throwing in the towel and applying at the nearest library for a job. Let me tell you, you are totally wrong. Your hard work, your tears, your perseverance, they're all going to pay off. You're so worth it.

All those dreams you've been thinking about? Keep thinking about them and make them happen because it's going to be a little hard. You may not get into your dream school, but maybe you'll get into the one that you're supposed to -- you just might not think that quite yet. By the end of high school, you're so many steps closer to becoming who you hope to be.

Most important of all: be kind. Be kind to those who are unkind to you, be kind to those who don't treat you properly, be kind to those who are your friends right now and try your best to not let the ending of the friendship kill you. It wasn't your fault, you were kind; they weren't. Be the bigger person and stand up for yourself -- especially when no one else will. You are who you are. So, hold your head high, princess, and don't let them see that pretty crown fall. Nobody can change who you are and what you're made of.

Yeah, college and the rest of your life are waiting for you outside those white brick walls, but that doesn't mean you should wish your way through high school. When it's done, I promise you, you're going to miss it so much more than you think you will. No more football games on the fence, no more proms, no more rides home with your friends, no more homecoming dress-up weeks; the minute you get that piece of paper, it's done.

Just don't grow up so fast. Once you get where you're going, it'll all be worth it -- I promise.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
