A Letter From A Student In An "Easy And Pointless Major"

Don't judge until you know.

Hello!

Just your friendly Communications and Digital Media major over here.

So my major as been categorized as an "easy pointless major." If you are one of those people who think my major is easy, congrats, you have a very unopened mind. That won't get you far in life.

Now, of course, my major isn't nursing or education, you know, the "harder majors." I mean don't get me wrong, I have friends in both majors and their work load is hectic, but then again so is mine.

If you take a step back and look deep into a major, is any major really that easy?

No. The answer is no.

Of course, nursing is important because students in the field will save lives. Students who are learning how to be teachers now will one day educate the youth. Communications? "Wow what a pointless major."

Wrong.

Communications is the sister major to being an English major. You can do a lot in life with both majors.

Oh, you think they're both easy?

Wrong.

I am proud of my major.

People think of Communications as journalism and paparazzi. Writing a bunch of 'fake news' and filming behind the scenes footage. Stalking famous people, and being news anchors. Radio personalities, and editing.

Communications is so much more than the stereotypical communications.

While in school, all people see is the communications students in our radio stations, TV broadcasting rooms, and editing booths, but we're so much more than that. Other students judge us because we run around the school learning how to use cameras all day, but nobody sees the background of that.

Nobody sees the preparation, to use that camera. How about that outline we have to provide before we even start filming. Or the three to four research classes where we study history, of communication and mass media, and write multiple papers, and we have to take those classes in order to obtain a degree. Some classes we are forced into taking gives us 35+ pages of readings a night.

Those classes are not because the school hates us and wants to give us more work.

Those classes are there so we can become better communicators after all.

Maybe, communications majors have a bigger plan ahead of them.

I know plenty of people that majored in communications who went on to be teachers, college professors, military personnel, historians, librarians... there's countless amount of professions.

I know plenty of people that majored in communications who went on to be radio personalities, DJ's, tv anchors, entrepreneurs, directors, human resources...there's countless amount of professions.

Still, think the major is pointless?

So, communications won't save your life physically, but how do you know if communication students aren't planning on furthering their education in graduate school, to become a health professional.

What about news?

Aren't communication majors "educating" the public? Yes.

Just to name a few, what about keeping in touch with family? Social media, that's all thanks to your communication majors. Entertainment on TV shows/movies/drama, thanks to us again. Long car rides where you need music in order to not fall asleep, provided by us. How about your favorite singer? We produce their music. We play their music on the radio and make it easy for you to put it on your playlist.

There is so much more than the list above communications majors do as well.

I am so sick of hearing my major is pointless.

It's not.

So the next time you judge an "easy pointless major," think to yourself, do I really even know what this whole major includes?

Sincerely,

A Proud Student in the Communication and Digital Media Major

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
