A Letter To My Best Friend Back Home

We may not see each other all the time, or talk everyday, but I just wanted to thank you for all that you do and let you know that I’m counting down the days until I see you again!

I can honestly say the fist time I met you, I had no idea that we would be where we are now. We met through a mutual friend (who oddly enough neither one of is is friends with anymore). You seemed nice, but that was as much thought as I gave it. I had no idea that you and I would soon be so close. Honestly, these days I can’t imagine my life without you. The first FCCLA hell week we survived together proved to me that we were going to be friends for a very long time. That week we napped in the hallways (that’s totally normal right?), ate a ton of candy ridiculously early in the morning and complained about how much we hated the world. When regionals rolled around, the stress was gone but our bond wasn’t.

During my senior year, I looked forward to our “study hall” every day. From eating Dippin’ Dots and gossiping with Amy, to Starbucks and Chik Fil’A dates, second period was always the highlight of my day. I can honestly say there aren’t many people that understand me quite like you do, and that’s something I’ve missed out on in a lot of friendships. I remember one summer night when something stupid happened and I was upset, I came over to eat ice cream with you and talk on your porch. I came to your house in such a bad mood and left feeling so much better, all thanks to you. I cannot thank you enough for all the times you’ve helped to totally turn my mood around by just being you.

Now that I’m in college and you’re finishing out your senior year, we don’t see or talk to each other as much as we used to. Even though I wish I could see you everyday, I am so blessed to have a friendship that can pick up exactly where it left off no matter how long we are apart. You are the first person I go to when I have a problem, and I know that I can talk to you about anything and everything. You always give me the best advice and are always there just to listen when I need you too. I am so happy and proud of everything you’re doing, and I owe you so much for supporting me through this bumpy year. Thanks for all our lunch dates and letting me help you with your FCCLA project/eat Brinner with your fam.

I miss you so much, and I can’t wait to kick it with you at FCCLA state again this year. I love you to the moon and back!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
