A Letter to a Friend Who Tried To Commit Suicide

Dear You,

I wish so much that you didn’t try to hurt yourself. When you told me about it, so many thoughts ran through my head. I didn’t know what to say or do, besides get all choked up. I had so many questions. Why would you do that? How did you do it? Why didn’t you call one of us to talk or help? What could I have done differently as your friend? How did we not see it coming? I wondered so many things; but the biggest questions were how and why?

I will never understand how or why someone like you could hate yourself so much. If you were able to see yourself through the eyes of all of your friends, you would think so differently. You aren’t perfect, and nobody is; but your flaws are what make you the beautiful person that you are. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are crazy for feeling the way that you do. Feelings are a crazy thing, so it is them that are crazy-not you. Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t beautiful, or that you aren’t good enough. You are good enough, and you are beautiful inside and out. So many people see that, so why don’t you? Your personality is one that is amazingly radiant. Your laugh is contagious. You are a great friend, family member, and significant other. You know that, and everyone around you knows that. You are always going out of your way to make others happy, and that is a great thing. People love you for it; but some people are just too blind to see how amazing you are. You don’t need the approval or love of everyone around you. You have the approval and unconditional love of your family, and your closest friends. We will always have your back through thick and thin. We will always fight to keep you safe and happy. What could be better than knowing that people care for you so immensely?

Next time you feel like you hate yourself so much that you can’t go on, I want you to call me. I want you to call any of your friends. Any of us will be there in a heartbeat, no matter how early or late it is. None of us want to see you suffer at all. We will do everything in our power to get you out of the situation you are in. When you feel like you are at Rock Bottom, remember that Rock Bottom is a place you are meant to bounce back from. Be strong and bounce back for me, your friends, and your family. You can do it. You can lift your head and your heart up high and say that you will be happy. You can go on, even stronger than you were before. You can walk away from the things that made you this unhappy about life. You can and will recover from this. I know it. We all do. Don’t you ever feel like you shouldn’t be on this Earth. You were put here for a reason, and that is to do all of the wonderful things that you do.

Love always,

Your friends

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
