Dear Dad,

Today is your day. Although you may think Father’s Day was created by Hallmark to make dad’s feel better about themselves since there’s a Mother’s Day, it’s still about you! Every year on Father’s Day, you still worry about your kids and your wife instead of relaxing and taking the day for yourself. Ever since I was younger, you’ve always been a superhero in my eyes. Bringing me back and forth to sports, rushing around like crazy for softball tournaments, and having some laughs along the way. I’ve always been a daddy’s girl, and have always strived to make you proud of me. To make you want to tell your friends about me, and be able to brag about my accomplishments and achievements, and you do just that! You brag about my good grades, my softball abilities, my work ethic, everything you can think of. You bask in the glory of your children’s accomplishments and that’s such a noble thing.

You’ve always supported me in everything I’ve ever done, even if you don't necessarily agree with my choices, you still back me up! Even when you’ve proven my decisions to be wrong at times you don’t shove it in my face that I was wrong and you were right, you use it as a teaching experience so I can learn and grow from my mistakes. Despite how close we are, there have still been some arguments over the years. Some that were silly, and some that were serious. But no matter what we’ve said or gone through together that doesn’t change the fact that you’re my dad.

Growing up you’ve always protected me from bad friends, boys, and the dangers of the world. You were my shoulder to lean on when I had friends stab me in the back, when I was stood up for my very first date, and my first major heartbreak. You always knew how to make it better and how to put a smile on my face, even when I’d much rather be crying in bed. You never sugarcoated anything in life to me. Whenever something bad happened, you never said it would be easy, but you offered your guidance and your shoulder to cry on.

I’ve always been so proud to tell people that you’re my dad. Softball has brought us even closer together, if that’s even possible. You aren’t just my dad, you’re my coach. You coached me at such a young age and guided me through the training of softball. With the weekend road trips, waking up at 6:00 a.m., and crying on the way home because we lost again, you were there every step of the way, always being my biggest cheerleader.

In my lifetime, I will never be able to thank you for all that you’ve ever done for me. You’ve sacrificed so much over the years for mom, Michael, and I. I admire who you are and have always looked up to you and will continue to look up to you for the rest of my life. I hope one day I’m lucky enough to find a man who’s half the man you are.

Thank you for everything daddy, I love you so much.

Happy Father’s Day!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
