A Letter For All The Sister-less Sisters

No, I have never wanted a sister. Call me crazy but I have never felt like I am missing out for not having one. With two of the best brothers in the world, I have fully experienced the whole sibling thing. I have never needed a sister to boss me around or borrow my clothes, and I had enough cousins to find someone to play Barbies with me. Yes, I still participated in ballet and wore lots of sparkles. Believe it or not, I managed to be a complete girly girl without a sister by my side. Instead, I was blessed with two brothers as my lifelong best friends, and I could not imagine it any other way.

With two brothers, my pink was always tinged with a little blue. This meant that sparkly sneakers hung up alongside muddy cleats, and Polly Pocket’s somehow played with Ninja Turtles. I have been tackled an endless number of times, and my hair was pulled on a day-to-day basis. While this may not seem like much, it means everything to me. The tackles and hair pulling have made me a little rougher around the edges resulting in my own form of resiliency. Though we may have grown out of being childhood playmates, my brothers still remain my best friends. To this day, I can count on my car ride talks with one brother and long phone calls with the other. My little brother still makes me laugh harder than anyone else and my older brother is one of my greatest role models. These two young men have become much more than just my friends in the sandbox. They have become my closest friends for the rest of my life.

To all those girls out there who have felt as if they are missing out in the sister department, remember the boys in your life. Think of all the girls missing out on that feeling of pride when your brother makes a great play in a game or the quick forgive and forget that a sister would never give. Who else would teach you how to properly throw a football? These boys of yours teach you lessons that a sister never could. They show you how a real man should treat you and what love really is because there is no love quite like the brotherly kind. You do not only have two best friends, but also two boys always watching over you. Remember to always count your brotherly blessings because one day the number of hair-pullings will be doubled by hugs and the number of arguments by laughter.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
