Growing up, I never believed people when they said the friends I will meet in college are going to be my best friends for forever on. Until now.

So here it is. A letter to my first college best friend.

M,

You have become my everything in such a short amount of time. A year ago I would have never thought that we would be this close. I never thought I would meet my lifelong best friend this soon and I am so happy I did. In such a short amount of time, you have helped me through so much. Whether you know it or not, you are truly my rock. Through the good and the bad times, I can always count on you to yell at me when I am wrong but to also be a shoulder to cry on when I need one. Although we fight so much about stupid little things, I am so happy to have you. I love our pointless arguments. I love our random life talks about what we will be doing after college. I love thinking about the future with you. I love sharing the same passion with you. I love sitting on our phones next to each other in the same room without even saying anything. I love binge watching Netflix with you. I love eating immense amounts of food with you and then complaining about how much we just ate. I love setting goals with you. I love getting excited about life with you. I love succeeding with you. I love our pictures. I love our conversations. I love our heart to hearts. I love everything about you and this friendship. This is unique and strong friendship that I will cherish forever no matter what happens and I promise you that.

Thank you for seeing the good in me when all I can see is the negatives. Thank you for being a friend who has not walked away when I needed you the most. Thank you for talking me out of the bad decisions you know I will regret in the long run. You know me better than myself and I love that.

Wherever life takes us I know I will always have a friend by my side to get through the tough times. I know I’ll always have a friend to laugh with, to cry with. I will also always have a friend that will tell me exactly what I need to hear even if it's not what i want to hear.

I promise to always pick you up when you are down and to yell at you when you need it. I promise to remind you how much you are worth when you feel worthless. I promise to always go on crazy adventures with you. I promise to spend money on food even though we specifically agreed that we wouldn't. I promise to be that person for you just as you have for me, through everything. I promise you remind you how strong you are when you feel weak. I promise to listen to you. I promise to be there when the world feels like is falling apart in your arms. Most importantly I promise to always be a best friend.

Thank you for everything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
