Picture this: a job you enjoy. While being a caregiver is not always the most glamorous job, it is still very fulfilling. For the first time in my life, I do not dread going to work. For those of you who understand, this is a true blessing. I can walk into and out of work with a smile because I know I made a difference. Although this is the most difficult and trying position I have had thus far, it still brings me the most joy.
Being a caregiver means being given the privilege of helping people in their most vulnerable state. I am the one who helps them when they cannot help themselves. I am the one who holds their hand when they are scared and visiting hours are over. I am the one who expresses their best interest when they cannot. Being of service to people, even in the smallest way is really an honor. It may not feel like an honor when your elbow deep in bodily fluids, but it really is. We have been entrusted with the health and safety of another person, a person with family and friends and pets. That is an honor.
So often, people become caught up in the negatives of their careers and let that ruin what they are actually doing. Please don't let that happen to you. It is always a good idea to stop, think about the job you are doing, think about your patients, and remember the difference you make. Bad days are apart of life, but they should not allow you to get down and out about the job you are doing. The job you do is for your patient and their loved ones, don't let a bad day make you forget that. The job you do is bigger than you, your floor, and even the hospital you work at, don't let a bad day make you forget that.
Do not allow yourself to think of your job as small or insignificant.
You are compassionate. You make a difference. You are a CNA.
