A Letter To My College Roommate

For all the memories, past, present, and future: thank you.

A Letter To My College Roommate
Heather Stephens

Hey, sister.

You have been my roommate for two years now and today as we were moving you out to go back home for the summer, it hit me: I'm literally not going to see her for like two and a half months. Two hours is so far away :( I also realized that I never thank you for all the kind things you do for me and for always being my right hand lady.

Coming into college two years ago, we did not know the first thing about each other. We were randomly paired together and I am forever thankful for that. Walking in that dorm that day, I never imagined that we would end up becoming sisters. It turns out, me and you are very different, but we are alike where it counts.

This is the part where I thank you for being the awesome individual you are ;)

Thank you for being my right hand lady. Having the same classes, being in the same clubs, it all has brought us extremely close. Thanks to you I'll never eat lunch or dinner alone and thanks to you I'll never be awkwardly looking around the room when the professor calls for partner projects, because my partner is already beside me. With you, I'll always have someone with me every step of the way.

Thanks for always letting me borrow your clothes. I have a dresser full of clothes and a rack of clothes as well. I still need your clothes too though! Thanks for always lending me shoes and cardigans, where would I be without you?

Thanks for never telling me no. If we're shopping or even in the dessert line, "should I eat this brownie?" "should I buy these shoes?" Thanks to you my butt and my shoe collection has gotten extremely large in the past two years.

Thanks for being my shoulder to cry on, kind of. We're tough. So we don't cry. Just kidding, you and I both know I'm an emotional mess. I cry about anything and everything. Thank you for never judging me for all the random tears I've shed. Whether it was over a boy or a random commercial on TV that made me sob. Thank you for accepting my random emotional outbursts, I love you for that.

Thank you for being so unbelievably loyal. Loyalty is big for me. Lots of friends back home have no problem dragging my name through the mud. I'm not completely sure that some of them would have my back if something went down. You, however, would be right there with me regardless of the problem or situation. You are always ready to go to war with me. You'll smack talk the girls I hate and make fun of my boyfriend's ex-girlfriends with me. Just like I do for you. Thank you for always having my back and never making me question your loyalty.

Lastly, thank you for all the adventures and laughs. Whether it was hiking or jumping in the truck with a stranger and going to a "get together", we have a ball. We can lay in bed and watch Law and Order or skip class and go shopping. I can't tell you how many times it's been 12 'o clock at night, when we should really be in bed, but we really just need a McChicken. Thank you for making me laugh until I'm nearly peeing on myself. Thank you for making bad days, good.

Oh, sister... it's been a wild two years. I know we only have one more year left together, but don't forget we're moving to Florida when we get done with grad school. I love, love, love you!

yours truly,

your insanely wonderful roomie

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
