A Letter to Me

Now that I am out of highschool, I wanted to look back and reflect on one of my biggest regrets.

A Letter to Me
Me

Dear Candice [the Girl],

Look at yourself and take a good look, too. You see that wide, bright, dazzling smile? Where did it go?

You have done so much over the years. Remember when you first joined the school choir and orchestra AND took martial arts for the first time? Remember when you opened that small mouth of yours to sing and shout?

But enough about that.

Look at yourself and take a good look, too. You see that wide, bright, dazzling smile? Where did you put it?

You have shared it with your family. You have shared it with your friends. You have even shared it with yourself every day you woke up. There you were each day, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, smiling that sweet smile of yours...

And pinching the fat on your cheeks

And pulling on the skin on your disappearing jawline.

And sucking in your cheeks to make your cheekbones stand out.

And sucking in your stomach.

What's happening to the little girl I once knew? Where is that smile she showered on so many others? You lift all the lives behind you, yet you have pulled yourself down so many times.

You have spent years exercising for hours each day, staring at the numbers on the scale, skipping meals, and hitting the reset button each time. You see the scale go down, and you could barely stay awake, no matter how "happy" and "perfect" you felt. You see the scale tip up, and you can barely stop exercising and drinking vinegar to shed those pounds. Reset. Reset. Reset.

STOP IT RIGHT THERE

Do you miss that jawline? Perhaps. Do you want that heart shaped face again? I'm sure you do. Do you want to weigh that perfect 120? Trust me, I have been trying for years.

But forget about all of that. What matters the most in you [and you...YEAH YOU READING THIS ARTICLE] should not be your looks. It should be your confidence, your positive energy, your compassion, and all the characteristics that bring good to the world and yourself.

No cutting jawline? No problem. Round face? Be proud of it! Not the weight you want to be in? At least be thankful you're healthy, alive, well, and loved!

Yes, the media may make their own rules about beauty and perfection, but screw all of that! You have so much going for you, and the fact that you're happy and healthy is sexy by itself.

You are beautiful, you are smart, and you have the power to command your own life, not anyone else. Celebrate all you can do and all you are, and I promise you that everything will fall into place.

Love and hugs,

~Candice [the Young Woman]

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
