A Letter To My Big-Little Brother

You're not so little anymore.

A Letter To My Big-Little Brother
Bobbi McDowell

Hi Bugga,

When I say you’re my best friend, I want you to know that I mean it. When we were younger and used to butt heads, Mom would always tell me that blood is thicker than water. She would also tell me that friends will come and go, but luckily I have a friend in you that will never go away.

One of my favorite pictures of us is from when we were little munchkins. Ashleigh was babysitting us I’m pretty sure, and on the back porch in our pajamas she convinced us that we could be superheroes. There was one stipulation, however, to receiving our powers: we needed to pull our underwear over our heads. Thinking about it now, that was a mortifying experience. But when you look at our faces in that picture, we were full of pride. We were so excited because in that moment we were unstoppable.

We still are.

When we hang out, I know there are gonna be some memories made. We talk about anything and everything and make jokes that only make sense to us. Some would consider our conversations “over sharing,” but I’m glad that I can talk to my little brother about anything. You force me to have a level head at times because I remind you that you’re allowed to goof off a little from time to time. And in a lot of ways, you remind me I don’t have to be stiff all the time; I’m allowed to have fun, too. Sometimes it’s okay to start a USA chant in the middle of the food court.

Thanks for being my right hand man. Thank you for having the same face as me so that I never have to explain that you’re not my boyfriend, but rather my brother. Thank you for being there when my heart has been broken. Thank you for knowing when I want to talk about something and when I’d prefer to leave it alone. Thank you for knowing what to do when I’m upset, which 9 times out of 10 involves food. Thank you for being the best friend I could have ever asked for.

Whenever anything goes wrong, my first thought is to be there for you. I know you’re pretty close to grown by now, but I’ve come to realize that I’ll probably always feel the need to look out for you. I also want to apologize for the fact that you always seem to get the short end of the stick. But your time to shine is coming, Bug. I can’t wait to see where you’ll be this time next year, and in five years, and in ten years. I am so proud of the man that you are becoming, and I’m so excited to see what your future has in store. You’re still a superhero in my eyes, Bugga Boo. And I hope that you’ll always let me be your hero support (Sky High reference, if you missed it).

I love you, Eggot Allen,

Bobbi

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
