A Letter To My Best Friends In College
Gabe Knight

My dearest best friends,

First of all, I want you to know how thankful I am to have you in my life.

You came to me at a time when I needed you most. It was a time when I was starting a new life, with none of the comforts or friends of high school around. I am thankful that of all the incoming freshmen, you chose me.

I am thankful for all of our adventures.

I can honestly say no one knows me quite like you do. I believe relationships are unique. I have a unique relationship with you that I can't describe. I am thankful to have you there just when I need you most, no matter the time or day.

Thank you for sticking by me.

Our friendship quickly went from barely knowing anything about each other to knowing almost every detail about each other's lives. Through all of the drama, the insane stories, the hardships, you still saw me fit to be your best friend.

Whenever something happens, whether it be sad, happy, funny, whatever, you're the first to hear about it. My automatic response is to pull out my phone and text you. I want you to be the first to know about everything going on in my life. I also want you to be the first one to give me advice when I need it.

You treat my family as your own, and that means the world to me.

You are just as important to me as my family, and I'm glad you look at my family as your second family. I'm glad you feel completely comfortable around my family. I'm glad that my family feels comfortable around you and wants the very best for you, just as they want for me.

Thank you for knowing just what I need.

You know exactly when I need a hug, to vent, or ice cream. You know when I'm moody and just need some time to myself. You know when I'm happy. You know my moods, my personality, and basically everything else. You know when it's the perfect time for a pity party or a movie night.

I know exactly who to call when there's a bad storm. I know exactly who to call when I can't sleep. I know exactly who to call when I need someone.

No matter the need, you are there for me. No matter how silly or small it may seem, you're still there for me. You never judge; you offer only support. I don't think I can ever thank you enough for that.

You became my family.

You became my shoulder to cry on while I'm away from my mom. You became my protector while I'm away from my dad. You became my sibling to aggravate while I'm away from my brothers. You are a part of my family.

There is no one I'd rather do college with more than you. There is no one I'd rather share every detail of my life with more than you.

I am thankful for every laugh, every tear, every late night, every cookie we didn't need, and every adventure we've shared. I love you, and you mean the world to me.

Love,

Your Best Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
