I woke up this morning to the news that 50 people had been killed overnight in Orlando, Florida. The day before, I woke up to the news that a young singer had been killed while doing something she loved. And, for the past couple of weeks, my news feed has been full of pictures of a "star swimmer" who is only getting three months in jail for raping a woman.
To be honest, I really don't know how to comprehend all of these things at once. All of this happening has caused me to literally delete every social media app on my phone because I just can’t stand to see all this pain in the world anymore. And I can tell you that doing that was the best possible thing I could have done for myself.
When thinking about the events that have happened just in the past month, it really makes me (and I’m sure, a ton of other people) realize how precious life is and how fast it can be taken away from us.
But, in light of these horrible acts, it seems that the best of every single one of us comes out. We see people donating blood to those who need it because the hospitals ran out. People were standing outside in the heat for five to seven hours just to help someone they didn’t even know. If that’s not God at work, then I don’t know what is.
I hope we can all take these days in stride after these tragedies to reflect on our lives and where we stand in the world. We can all do so much and make such a big difference and we don't even know it. We go about in the world everyday and have no clue what is going on with the person we walk past going down the street. This is a time for all of us to become aware. To see each other in a different light -- a good one, I hope.
So, yes. We need to mourn. But most importantly, we need to learn and act. The world can be a horrible place sometimes, and it's up to us to make it better.
