A Letter About My Last Summer At Home

Here's to the last summer, let's make it count!

A Letter About My Last Summer At Home
Lauren Yandow

There are just four more weeks left of the semester. As summer approaches, it's hard to believe that this is my last summer until I am graduated, and off in the real world. It's hard to imagine that at this time next year, I will (hopefully) have a full-time job. Whether my new career will start in the place I've called home for all my life or a new city, I know that I will no longer be on summer vacation for the rest of my life.

"This will probably be my last summer at home" is a line I've been hearing quite often from some of my closest friends. Although it's sad to think that this will be the last time we are all together before we are real adults, I'm excited for what's ahead. I have fond memories with my friends in the summer, and they are some I will never forget.

Growing up, summer was about being out of school, endlessly playing outside with friends, and having cookouts with your family. There's nothing quite like a Vermont summer, from walks on the waterfront, to eating creemee's at your favorite stand. I have fond memories of going on boat rides on Lake Champlain or having pool parties at my best friend's house. It truly is the most amazing place to be during those warm three months.

Even as I have grown older, I still love coming home after every school year, seeing friends, and talking about how everyone's year was. After graduation, everyone left for different school, some in different states, but summer is the time where everyone always comes home. Although a lot of our time is focused on working, earning money, I think everyone agrees that you couldn't spend your summer's anywhere else because they wouldn't compare to Vermont summers.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
