HP 1: Let's Talk About Opinions

Just because you have one doesn't mean you're right, but it also doesn't mean you're wrong.

HP 1: Let's Talk About Opinions

We have opinions on almost everything. Opinions are based on beliefs and values and ideas, they are personal and surprise, not everyone is going to agree with you and your opinion. Lately, I think people have been confused on what it is to have an opinion. Just because you have one doesn't mean you're right, but it also doesn't mean you're wrong. Opinions aren't always fact based, and even when they are some people still aren't going to agree with you. That is why opinions are a tricky subject to talk about, but I'm going to try.

1. What is the definition of opinion?
Google says that an opinion is a view or judgement formed about something, and that the view or judgment made is not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

2. Why should we form opinions?
Having an opinion is important because beliefs and ideas lead to conversation which can lead to new beliefs and ideas. It's important to have an open mind and take in other's opinions. Some opinions are going to conflict with yours and that is perfectly okay. If we all think alike then we would be living in an extremely boring world.

3. Why it's okay to not agree with someone else's opinion.
I stated that it's important to take in and have an open mind to other's opinions, but you don't have to agree with them. While it's sometimes hard to acknowledge that someone has a different view than you, it is important to realize people have different ideas because they aren't you. There are 7 billion plus people on Earth and believe me when I say a large percentage of those people are going to have differing opinions on subjects. It's perfectly okay and normal to not agree with someone else's opinions.

4. Don't become offended if someone disagrees with your personal opinion.
Accept that others have a different view, appreciate their idea and move on. Even though you might sway some people with a strong opinion, other's are held strong in their own and will strongly disagree.

5. Choose your battles: Know the difference between an argument and an exchange of ideas in opinion.
Opinions shouldn't bring about a negative reaction, although sometimes they do. Opinions should bring about good conversation, exchanging ideas is always a positive. Building on ideas you already have is what growing intellectually is all about. Expand your mind, don't waste time arguing on who is right and who is wrong because technically no one is wrong, that's the thing about opinions.

I think I covered the topic of opinion pretty well, but that's my opinion. I'll let you form your own.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
