I'm sure some of you have heard about the Stanford swimmer, Brock Turner, who was charge with sexual assault after raping an unconscious woman. He was only sentenced to serve six months in jail, according to the Judge "a prison sentence would have a severe impact on him."

By now I'm sure that the women reading this are thinking that it is crap that he is getting off pretty much scot-free for ruining this women's life. In what world does a man think it is ok to take advantage of an UNCONSCIOUS woman, no matter what the circumstances are. In this case, they had never met prior to this encounter.

There is nothing worse in this world that people taking a woman's worth in to their own hands. Women are not objects to please men, nor will they ever be. Rape is a serious issue in American colleges. One in 4 women will be sexually assaulted during their college years. If that doesn't scare you, somewhere in America a women is raped every two minutes.

If you are a man reading this and you side with Judge Persky's sentencing for rape, imagine if she was your sister, girlfriend, or best friend. You would do anything to protect any of those women in your life. If this would happen you would want the rapist to suffer, so rethink your stance on this issue.

Sexual Assault leaves a huge print on the victim. They are left feeling worthless, angry at themselves and self-deprecated. This kind of tragedy never leaves their minds. It is something they have to live with forever. Some victims don't know their assailant, so they don't know if they have contracted anything. The victim in this case even said that after she realized what happened she "didn't want her body anymore". She even said she couldn't tell her parents or boyfriend, she didn't eat, sleep, or even talk. When she got off of work she would drive to a secluded place to scream. If you don't think that rape effects a person, it does. In the most horrible ways possible.

Let's look as his problems after, his father said that "his every waking moment is filled with worry, anxiety, fear and depression." He also stated that he is having trouble eating steak, which is his favorite food. A direct quote that disgusts me immensely is that a long sentence would be "a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 years of life." You consider rape, "action". What kind of human being can consider rape to be come sort of fratty hookup.

Rape isn't just an accident, it is a serious crime that many people feel they are too "privileged" to face serious charges with. This is a surfacing issue that needs more people to speak out about it. There are victims who feel that if they come forward they will be targeted for lying about it or people will say that their case isn't plausible. A women would never lie about being sexually assaulted. When a women says no, she means no. Whether it be before, during, or she is unconscious a no is no. If a woman is intoxicated and says yes, it is not consent.

Just remember rape is rape, there is no justification for the actions of a rapist.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
