Let's Talk About Introversion

It's not really what you think it is.

Let's Talk About Introversion
Thought Catalog

If you're an introverted person like I am, you probably have been categorized into the stereotypical introverted category. You know what I mean. People, without getting to know you first, assume you are shy and that you dislike socializing. People assume that you care only about yourself. I am an introvert, but I have qualities that would also be found in extroverted people. With many people, it's honestly never usually as clean-cut as the label "introverted or extroverted." Here are eight things about my introversion that many introverts like me can relate to.

I'm introverted, but I love to meet new people.

It's usually assumed that introverts dislike talking to new people. Some do. Sometimes I get nervous when I talk to someone new, but that doesn't stop me from doing it. I love making new friends!

I'm introverted, but I can get up in front of people and speak.

OK, so this one causes my stomach to do flips. But I can do it. I can calm myself and make others think I'm confident when I speak. Half the time I am, but half the time I can feel myself shaking. It depends on the day. Seriously.

I'm introverted, but I like to have fun and socialize.

Sure, I'm normally quiet. But when I get to talking with people, I really talk. And when I'm with my friends, I probably talk too much. I'm not into big parties or any of the stereotypical college activities (so that's pretty typical for an introvert, I guess), but I absolutely love to have a good time with my friends.

I'm introverted, but I'm a very positive person.

I'm not a negative people-hater. I don't hate the world or anything like that. I try my best to be positive about things, even when things get rough. And just because I may be quiet about it doesn't mean I'm angry.

I'm introverted and I love alone time.

I like to spend time by myself and just think about things. It's not weird, I promise. I like to hang out in my room and watch movies. I like being in my own place where I feel absolutely comfortable. Alone time is good. Many people fear it.

I'm introverted and read a ton.

Yes, it's true. I read a lot. I like to visit fantasy worlds and escape from the one we live in from time to time. Doesn't it sound fun?

I'm introverted and I'm creative.

I usually have a lot of thinking time on my hands. My thoughts are constantly rummaging through ideas and whatnot. I think of ideas for stories. I reminiscence through past memories. I think about random things. I create new things in my mind and try to put them on paper.

I'm introverted and I always will be. And I love it.

I'm content with myself. I absolutely love who I am. I hate labels, but they exist; and since they do, I'm going to say that being an introvert is a fantastic thing.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
