Not many agree with me when I say that Frida and Diego’s story is the greatest love story of all time. I believe their story explains love in a real way, destroying our expectations about love and the way it should be. I, as so many other people, was raised on Disney movies, which made me create a certain idea of love that I've come to realize is nonexistent. Fairytales and happy endings are not something we should hope for, which is why I believe Frida and Diego's love story is the greatest love story ever heard.
Their Relationship Began Based on Art
Frida and Diego met while she was seeking advice on her artwork. They were both determined to keep their partnership professional, promising to never sleep with each other. Obviously that promise was broken, but they still found a way to collaborate artistically while still embracing individuality within their work. The managed to sustain a team effort as they found the perfect balance of independence in the work place.
They Were Best Friends
Their story shows the true nature of why love should be based on friendship. There is no doubt that Frida and Diego go together like peanut butter and jelly. They teach everyone to not be afraid of being yourself when in a relationship. Both of them never lost the essence of their personalities because that is what brought them together in the first place.
Frida is Revolution
Frida Kahlo is the perfect example of an independent woman who falls in the trap of true love. She is known for her self-appreciation in her portraits. Despite her political ideas and health issues, Frida has been the image of feminism since the 1930’s for demonstrating that constant self-expression is not a sin. She managed to show a rebelliousness that meant liberty. She was not a damsel in distress waiting to be saved by Diego, she did what she felt like doing and created a name for herself. Her independent ideals transformed her into a feminist icon that destroyed gender roles simply because she embodied both male and female genders. She portrays the way a person should love and empower themselves rather than complying to their partner.
The Love Affairs Only Lead Them Back to Each Other
Diego Rivera was a famous womanizer as Frida was engaging in relationships with both men and women. During their marriage, Frida became involved with many men including Leon Trotsky, while Diego had a sexual relationship with Frida’s sister Cristina. Here is the part where the eyebrows are raised. Do I still believe this is the greatest love story of all times? Yes, I do. The fact that both of them got involved with different people shows the imperfections of love. It is important to note that after Diego got involved with Cristina, Frida filed a divorce. Their relationship may not have been based on loyalty, but it was sure based on fidelity. And yet, the same year that they divorced, they remarried again, showing that they always found their way back to each other.
They Were Both Free Spirits
Both of them did whatever they pleased whenever they pleased. Though this is questionable, I enjoy how both Frida and Diego demonstrate the idea of falling in love with the inside of a person, as opposed to the outside. They find each other perfect despite their flaws. They both love and respect each other’s personalities. Frida and Diego allowed each other to be themselves, since that is what brought them together in the first place.
“If I had clipped her wings she would have been mine, she would not have escaped. But so, she would no longer be a bird. And what I loved what was the bird.” -Mikel Laboa
They Are The Definition Of Passion
It is no secret that Frida and Diego have written some of the most beautiful and heartfelt letters to each other. Whether the words they say to one another are words of hate or of love, every single word is written with so much passion that even the reader can understand what they were going through at the time.
Here is a passage of a letter to Diego on July 23, 1935:
“And deep down you and me love each other very much and even though we have had countless affairs, door cracks, insults and international complaints, we always love each other- and every rage tantrum I have caused has only lead me to understand that I love you more than my own skin, and that even if you don’t love me in the same way, you love me in some way, don’t you? Or even if it’s not true, I will always have the hope that it is like that and with that I am satisfied.” -Frida Kahlo
We Are All Frida And Diego
Despite the lying and cheating, I can argue that Frida and Diego’s relationship is probably the most honest love stories of all times. Everyone at some point in their lives is Frida. There is always that one love (not necessarily a first love) that stays the same no matter how many times it has been destroyed. Everyone has a Diego (with another name and in another time) that is always both present and absent at the same time. Their story is everyone's story in some way or another. We have all experienced (or will experience) a love that is so passionate that will fight against all odds to find a way back to where it all started.
