Okay, Boston is full of history. Let’s stop trying to hide it because they were racist individuals. At that point, acceptance wasn’t even a word. But we are renaming history! Anything from Yawkey Way to Faneuil Hall, it’s history people! What are we going to do next? Rip down the statues of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton? Ignore Thomas Jefferson’s, Andrew Jackson’s, or James Monroe’s entire presidency?
I’m not supporting racism in any way, but I’m supporting the history of America. We would literally have to ignore the entirety of the Revolution and multiple presidents, in order to hide the racism in America. So instead of suppressing the racism that happened in history, let’s solve the current racial profiling issues. Suppressing history doesn’t change it, it means it’s more likely to repeat itself. If we stop teaching the revolution and equality rights then we are bound to head backwards, to a time where racism was far more severe, and women were far from equal.
Racism does need to be addressed by society, but absolutely not by renaming historical buildings like Faneuil Hall, or we will spend more time renaming half of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts instead of actively addressing racism or addressing the judicial system and their allowances of repeat offenders back on to the streets.
Renaming Faneuil Hall is basically saying the protests of the Sugar, Stamp, and Townshend Acts didn’t happen, and that Boston Massacre didn’t happen or aren’t of importance. Yes the racism needs to be stopped, but not at the sake of American history. So let’s stop renaming historical sites, and let’s focus on current society.
