With a prompt given by a student teacher, I was to write based off of the line, “Let’s Pretend That”. When this came to mind, all I could think of is the degeneration and deterioration of something that was once healthy, and that the sensation of wishing something was different still held.
Let’s Pretend That
Let’s pretend that a thousand lifetimes ago
The first day
Where your tabletops were brown and looked healthy
Instead of rugged and torn
And where your floors weren’t torn apart like a hundred tigers
That couldn’t stay away from digging their nails
In your carpet like a scratch post
Let’s pretend that faces never had to turn blue
And that air was always welcomed into your body
Where hands never shook like an earthquake
Until they held stiff and frigid
A thousand lifetimes ago
