It's that time of the season. Double days; two practices a day. Athletes are pushed to their absolute limits. We are tested mentally and physically in every way possible. Pulled quads, sucking for air, and tight hamstrings. But the end goal is in sight. It's all so close we can feel it.
I sprinted about one to two hours a day and ran the timed mile like it was my job. Wait, I didn't know I was trying out for the track team? I was literally just trying to block out the sheer pain the whole time. The vibe on campus and in the gym was exciting though. Seeing all the athletes with a little gimp and ice bags made me feel like one big Dominican family.
Double days brought our team together like no other. This weak in particular forces us to work together as a unite. We eat together, take naps together and do pretty much everything together. We all have one job and we are to execute it.
I am proud to say I have completed the most mentally and physically challenging week for us athletes. It is something we prepared for all summer. I can take a deep breath and say I did it. And now our focus is on practices, and winning games. We are going up in conference. Here we come, baby.
Here are some crucial tips that helped me survive double days:
1. Forward thinking
All of the pain you are enduring now will all be worth it. Think about the games you will be winning. Think about being a leader. There are people watching, on the court and off.
2. Take care of body
Train during your off season so double days doesn't hit you like a brick. Stretch and build muscle. Replenish and take care of your body.
3. Good nutrition
Eat, and drink tons of water. Make sure to nourish your body with good carbohydrates and protein. Fruits and veggies are also very nutritious. Stay away from temptations. They will slow your race to the finish line.
4. Positive attitude
Stay a positive light for your team. During turmoil, show your team encouragement and intensity. Show the passion you have for the game and your words will help lead.
5. Team oriented
Put your team first. It will be hard to balance your school and personal load but that's the life of a student athlete. Work hard in practice for your teammates, and most importantly yourself. You are all sacrificing so much.
I wish all my student athlete friends a good year and season. You will do so well. You can conquer anything you put your mind to.
Take care of yourself most importantly. Have fun and enjoy these years at Dominican and being a college athlete. These memories will be great to tell your kids one day! ENJOY!
