One very common thing that many people do during this time of year is decide what their New Year’s revolution is going to be. For most people, it’s things like losing weight or being a better person or getting a new hobby. While these are great ideas, they don’t usually last very long. Gym memberships that are made on January 1 are usually cancelled after two weeks, people go back to being rude after one good deed, and others get bored or give up on their hobbies very easily. That’s why I think we should do away with New Year’s resolutions all together.
The reason that people make these resolutions is because they think that because it’s a new year, they have a chance to start fresh and change who they are. This shouldn’t be the case. It shouldn’t take a holiday or the coming of a new year for people to change their lives. With that kind of mindset, it makes people think that they can do whatever they want for the rest of the year because they’ll be able to change once the new year comes.
If you want to make a change, you shouldn’t wait until the end of the year to do it. What if it’s the middle of the year when you realize you want to make a change to your life? Are you going to wait six months until you make a New Year’s resolution to make that change, especially one that probably isn’t going to last? That’s why I say that instead of New Year’s resolutions, we make it okay to change who we are any day of the year.
Change can be scary and people aren’t always going to support you, but you need to do what’s best for you. If that means losing weight or becoming a better person or even getting rid of some toxic friendships, then so be it. New Year’s resolutions can be so appealing because you know that you’re not the only one that’s making the change, but they’re also easier to get rid of and end once you know that everyone else is ending theirs too. If you want to make a change and stick with it, make sure it’s something that you both want and need. Don’t let other people’s decisions influence what’s best for you. Go and make that change, any time of the year.
