Let's Be More Like Lilly King

Sometimes you just have to wag your finger and speak out against what isn't right.

For those who have been keeping up with the Olympic Games, swimming, in particular, there is one girl who wagged the number one finger in the air that everyone knows by name. Lilly King spoke out against Russia's Yulia Efimova for being banned previously for doping.

Regardless of if you stand on Lilly King's side or not, she stood up for what she believed in. She was not afraid to speak her mind about how she truly feels, and I think sometimes as humans we need to be more like that.

It's hard to speak up, especially when you are on the not so favorable side and everyone else seems to be against you. They always say there is strength in numbers but is it better to stand for something you are against just to be with the crowd or to stand alone?

Honestly, a lot of us would stand in the crowd and say things people want us to say. If you are a girl they expect you not to speak out and to mind your business, and if you are a guy they expect you to obviously stand with the guys because what are bros for, right?

We may not realize it, but we are faced with the pressures of conforming to the majority side constantly. Who wants to be one vs an entire group of people? Even to me, that sounds a bit scary. Why can't we stand up for what we believe in without getting some form of judgement or criticism? Why can't we state our opinion without someone instantly calling us biased, one-sided, even worse things like a bigot?

For the longest time I was the opposite of Lilly King. I wouldn't conform to the majority per say, but I also did not stand up for what I thought was right. I just stayed in my only little world pretending nothing was happening when in reality that is just as bad. Saying nothing at all could go one of two ways. Either you automatically side with the majority, or you get put into the spotlight and are forced to instantly choose a side, and most people won't go to the one person by themselves they would choose the group.

At one point, we have all been guilty of this. We all have sided with the majority to either fit in, feel cool, or just because we didn't want to be that girl or guy to be picked on. Only this is the time we have to start standing up for ourselves. This is the time we have to say what we feel and be honest, just like Lilly King.

We have to understand there are going to be people who are against us, but it's better to go with how we truly feel than to sit in silence. Truth be told, just by one person standing up and speaking out then more will follow. It only takes one person and soon more will follow.

So maybe you might not speak out against doping, but maybe you can speak out against bullying, against rape, against child and animal abuse, against anything that doesn't sit right in your heart. Just know you are not alone. Let your inner Lilly King shine and don't be afraid to speak out.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
