Music is powerful. It has many amazing benefits in our lives. Many of the upsides to music are evident to us, but there are also many we are unaware of.

Music can help us through so much, so we need to be aware of all its benefits that way we can fully appreciate it.

Music can make you happier.

A fun, upbeat song can instantly change our mood for the better. It brings joy into our lives.

Think of a time when you’ve been down and then a fun or even your favorite song came on and you immediately felt better. We have all experienced music lifting our spirits in a time of need.

Music helps us focus.

A beautiful instrumental song can help us tune out the world and make us concentrate on the one thing we are working on.

Whenever I am working on a big or important assignment, I always turn on some classical tunes to help motivate myself and remain focused.

Music helps us sort through emotions.

If you are sad, angry, worried, or happy, there is a song out there that perfectly illustrates your emotions. And, when you mix the music with the words to find the perfect combination that matches how your feeling, it can help you come in tune with your emotions.

Music puts your feelings in to words for you, so you can quickly recognize your emotions and then work through them.

Music unites us with others.

Have you ever been in the car with your friends when that one song comes on? That one song that you all love. That one song you all know every word to. That is such a powerful moment. You all join in together and instantly feel closer to one another.

This feeling also happens at concerts. When you are at the concert of your favorite band, and you look around and see all these people there for the same purpose it can feel amazing. You feel so united with so many strangers from diverse backgrounds. But, you have this one band and this amazing experience in common, and that feels beautiful.

Music can pump us up.

Many people use music as a motivational tool for workouts. They have created the perfect playlist for their workouts.

Maybe they don’t feel like exercising that day, but when they hear those songs from their special playlist, they feel motivated to get up and go complete their workout.

Music inspires us.

Music can inspire us both through lyrics and melodies.

There are many songs I listen to that the words just get to me. They teach me things and open my eyes up to so many issues. They make me want to get up and go do good things.

Melodies of songs can also inspire us. The build up of a song can make us feel strong and powerful. It makes us feel on top of the world and like there is nothing we can’t do.

Music has an amazing power to inspire us inwardly towards great things and motivate us outwardly to go and do good.

Lastly, music is fun.

It helps us cut loose and feel good. We can dance and sing along. Music helps you feel free and not focus on your troubles. It shifts your focus towards just having a good time.

So, use music to help you. Whether it be for your emotions, exercise, fun, or inspiration, allow music to help guide you through this crazy thing we call life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
