Like many other young people, I have spent many moments thinking about my future. What job I want, how many kids I would like, how many dogs I want to greet me when I come home, what my dream house and dream car look like, all of these things make up a well-rounded life. There is one more thing that many young people dream of—what their wedding will be like and more specifically who will they be promising their life to. Like so many other young people, I think of this too. There’s one trait that my future husband must have—kindness.
There’s a specific quote that comes to mind when I think of how my future husband must be kind. It’s by Anais Nin and goes, “As other girls prayed for handsomeness in a lover, or for wealth, or for power, or for poetry, she had prayed fervently: let him be kind.” I don’t think I could have put my thoughts on my future husband in any better words. When it comes down to it, kindness has always been one of the most important traits to me. It doesn’t matter how intelligent, athletic, or good-looking a person is. It matters if a person is kind.
Dear future husband you have a lot to live up to. Many people that know me expects me to find a nice person that has a big heart. A former teacher once described the man she sees me marrying, “he will have a heart as big as yours, because you won’t settle for anything else.” So my future husband, I hope you take these expectations and blow them all away. I hope that you put being kind above everything else, because the world has seen too many people being unkind.
I haven’t yet met the guy with whom I want to share my entire life. Which I am quite happy with because I’ve got plenty of time to find the man I want to marry. When God sends my future husband my way, I hope that He answers my prayers and lets him be kind.
