After walking in my first fashion show last week, I learned many valuable lessons. Whether you are considering a career in modeling or simply curious about the crazy world of fashion, here lies a little insight as to what you should expect. It may surprise you.
1. If fashion shows are held in the winter time, chances are the models will be wearing spring and summer clothes. This is so buyers and fashionistas are able to stay up to date on fashion trends for the upcoming season(s). Thankfully, the show I walked in was held inside. Although I was modeling spring wear, the heated venue kept me nice and toasty from the freezing weather outside.
2. Make sure to practice your runway walk and poses before the show. Often times designers will have rehearsals allowing for the models to run through posing. However, occasionally there will be situations of uncertainty and rehearsals may not even be an option (such was the case for the fashion show I modeled in). Thankfully, I was able to think of poses beforehand and ask the staff about the walking pattern. By doing so, I was able to walk with confidence and rely on the poses I practiced before the show started.
3. In the fashion world, you will be dealing with lots of attitude from a variety of people. Runway shows are high-stress events. Makeup brushes will be flying while people are running around in 6-inch heels and tripping over camera equipment on the floor. It is crucial that as a model you know where you are supposed to be so not to get in anyone's way. Most importantly you must act professionally throughout the entire fashion show and respect the designers, hair and makeup artists, and models. Remember that modeling is a job that you were hired for and conforming to immaturity will ensure that you will not be asked to walk again.
4. Your hair, makeup, and clothing may not look the way you want them to. Nevertheless, keep in mind that the designer has a certain vision for their show and you were hired to represent such a look. Also, even before being hired to model in the show, you should have had an idea of the designer's style. That being said, if it is a style that you would not want to represent, turn down the job.
5. Be on timeE Speaking from personal experience, it is greatly appreciated when models arrive on time. I am able to go through fittings, hair and makeup in a timely matter and have enough time before the show to relax and not feel rushed. Models that keep staff and assistants waiting are regarded as unprofessional.
6. Above all else, have fun! Fashion shows are a blast. And if you are lucky enough to model in one, make sure you strut down the runway with purpose. Models are meant to sell the clothing they are wearing.
