With “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” fast approaching, fans of the hit TV series are binge watching the old seasons and loading up on as much coffee as they can drink. After waiting and praying to hear those four final words for nearly ten years, the time has finally come. This week, Netflix will be premiering the four part series on Black Friday. So before we hunker down with massive amounts of junk food and hot, caffeinated beverages, let us reflect on the lessons we learned from those legendary Gilmore Girls.
1. It’s okay to be a bookworm.
Rory Gilmore read constantly and studied furiously, and she still managed to intrigue three extremely attractive guys. It’s good to be smart and educated. Once you land that perfect guy, you’re going to want to have things to talk about with him.
2. Coffee in large amounts will make you talk fast.
Unless you’ve had a heavy dosage of caffeine in your day, don’t expect to keep up with those Gilmores. Whether they’re ranting, rambling, or roasting pop culture, they do it at an extremely fast pace.
3. Take the deviled eggs.
This is the Gilmore version of “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” You never know when they may come in handy.
4. Take chances.
It’s okay to be sheltered. But it’s also okay to be adventurous. In the words of Logan Huntzberger, “People can live one hundred years without ever really living for a minute. You climb up here with me, it’s one less minute you haven’t lived.”
5. There’s nothing that junk food can’t fix.
Bad break up? Wallow with junk food and romantic movies. Didn’t get the job you wanted? There’s pizza for that.
6. Sometimes, the right person for you is right in front of you.
Luke pined for Lorelai for ten years before she finally realized he was the guy for her. And even though there relationship fell on hard times, they still found a way back to each other. You never know when you’re going to realize that everything you need is in something you’ve had all along.
7. Friends come in all shapes and sizes.
Whether they’re neurotic, angry competitors like Paris or nurturing, perfectionist chefs like Sooki, it’s important to have friends who challenge you and make you into a better person.
8. Never stop trying.
Lorelai’s life definitely took a turn when she got pregnant at sixteen and didn’t go to college. But she never let that stop her. She continued to chase her dreams, and she got the successful inn she always wanted. Lane had a family who hated everything she loved, but she still managed to get her band and a relationship with her mom.
9. You’re going to fail sometimes.
Even Rory, who got everything she wanted for the first five seasons, fell on some hard times. Life is going to push you around. But it will also teach you how to get back up. It can’t be smooth sailing all the time, especially if the yacht you’re sailing on was stolen.
10. Your mom is a blessing.
She can be your financial advisor, your therapist, your coach, and your best friend all wrapped up in one neat package. Never underestimate how important your mom is to your life, and how hard she works to make sure you’re well fed, well read, and well rested.
11. Family is forever.
No matter how many mean things they say, no matter how much they upset you, your blood bonds will always be a part of you. For the Gilmore Girls, men come and go, but Friday night dinners are eternal.
