Poetry On Odyssey: Lessons

A bit of poetry concerning life lessons I had to learn as a child.

Poetry On Odyssey: Lessons
Jeanna Kehl

A lot has changed me,
But one thing has changed me the most.
Something that happened at a young age.
When a little girl loses her father,
She changes.

I was forced to grow up rather fast;
I felt I had to be strong for my family,
Even at a mere seven years old.
Yes, I was still a kid,
But I learned lessons most people learn later in life.

Like never take things for granted.
At a young age,
I learned to always cherish every moment with your loved ones.
You never know how much time you have left with them.
Anything can change in a split second.

Who would’ve thought
My daddy would be taken away from me?
A little girl needs her father;
She needs that male figure in her life.
But I had to learn that life isn’t fair.

At seven years old,
What shouldn’t be fair is that someone has the 100 pack of crayons,
And you don’t.
Not that someone had an epileptic seizure on the highway,
Crossing lanes of traffic,
Hitting your dad directly,
Killing him instantly.

That’s not how a child should learn that life isn’t fair,
But Life
Isn’t
Fair
And I learned I just have to accept that.

Along with the fact that
You never stop missing your loved one.
You never stop loving them.
You never move on.
You just learn to live with it.

Many things have changed me,
But my daddy dying when I was seven years old,
That changed me that most.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
