I’m of Irish descent; in other words, the sun and my skin do not mix. Time spent in the sun turns my skin from being translucent to a cherry red within the matter of minutes. Growing up, I definitely learned many lessons from the sun, here are a few of them.
Summer has a whole other meaning.
Sunscreen becomes your best friend.
It becomes that all important barrier between you and the relentless rays of the sun. It is your shield, your knight in shining armor. It lets you still take part in fun summer activities without the nasty repercussions.
You don't just "tan."
Never will you get that beautiful "golden brown" skin tone that others get during the summer months. Instead you become a lobster for a week, and your skin tone goes right back to being translucent.
Sunburns hurt, a lot. ![]()
Simple everyday tasks, like moving your arms or legs, becomes too painful. You begin to take for granted the times your skin had not been fried.
Rubbing your skin with Aloe Vera becomes a normal occurrence.
I will rub your back with aloe, if you do mine first!
Skin peels, just like a snakes skin.
When your skin is burnt, anything that is cool makes your day turn around completely.
Swim-shirts might not look cool, but they are a trusty companion at the beach.
Pitching a tent or umbrella becomes no problem.
Except for when it is windy!
You find creative ways of avoiding the sun.
The sun can do both wonders and damage to us. There hasn't been a year of my life where I have not avoided a nasty sunburn, but there are many lessons that my sunburns have taught me as a result. Be safe in the sun this summer!
