Lessons Learned From Wicked

This past Tuesday, I went into New York City with my mom, my cousin Joy and aunt Kristen. The city is about an hour and a half away from my house, so I try to get there as often as I can. I knew that I had a long day ahead of me in the big apple. We left my aunt's house at 6:30 am and didn't get home till around 1 am - but let me tell you, it was all worth it.

We went in to go to a Dr. Oz tapping and also to see the play "Wicked." I have seen this play three times previously before, but this would be the first time for my cousin and aunt. Just because I had seen this before made me no less excited, not only to see the play again but also to share the moment and my love for it with my twelve year-old cousin. "Wicked" is a play that I believe is good for all ages and has a lot of lyrics that translate well and are a good parallel to life. For those of you who are not familiar with the story that this play tells, it is the story of the Wicked Witch from Oz and how she came to be, who she is and how things are not always as they seem to be. I'm going to share with you some of the lyrics that stick with me every time I see this play and what I translate them into.

"This weird quirk I've tried to suppress or hide is a talent that could help me meet the Wizard." - The Wizard and I

We are all different in many ways and that is what makes us who we are. We should not feel the need to disguise who we are in order to fit in with those around us. We must use our uniqueness and our talents to our advantage and bring good to the world in which we live in.

"Dancing through life, no need to tough it, when you can sluff it off as I do, nothing matters but knowing nothing matters, it's just life so keep dancing through - Dancing Through Life

This song is about how that in school everyone is so uptight and expects everything to be a certain way. This song teaches the audience to not take life too seriously, that making a fool out of yourself can sometimes be good, and to always look on the bright side and to make everyday fun.

"He could be that boy but I'm not that girl" and "Don't wish don't start wishing only wounds the heart." - I'm Not That Girl

Sometimes, people come into our life that maybe are not meant to be in as we'd hope them to be, or we wish that our relationship with them was different. Something else that this song teaches us it that we shouldn't constantly get our hopes up, because more often than not we will be let down.

"Something has changed within me, something is not the same, I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game" - Defying Gravity

We must each find something that sparks something within us, and take a stand for something even if not everyone agrees with what you believe in. You must be willing to take risks, even if not a ton of people are behind you because you can never know the outcome unless you try.

"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but, because I knew you I have been changed for good" - For Good

People come into our lives for certain reasons at exactly the right time and we sometimes may not realize this right away. We may be different in ways, but that is what make you so close and you balance each other out.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
