As a freshman, getting used to my new home has been a mixture of crazy and amazing. I mean, I am not even halfway through my first year, and I feel like a whole new person. I am drinking more coffee than water, I have already switched my majors once, and I am EXHAUSTED. Here are some things that I have learned since starting college life:
Saying goodbye is hard
GiphyEntering this new stage of life was pretty difficult for me. I was worried about leaving my life behind and starting all over. I cried a lot during move-in day, which sucked because it felt like everyone else was fine about this transition. Once classes started, those sad feelings began to go away, and I felt better about my life at college. Making myself busy and talking to people helped me the most. Homesickness can be hard to go through, but you aren't alone because it happens to a lot of other freshmen, too.
The schoolwork will overwhelm you
GiphyI was wrong when I thought that the schoolwork wouldn't be bad. I have already felt that overwhelming feeling of banging my head against a wall as the work begins to pile on. Then, you get to the point where you feel like the workload is unmanageable. Staying on top of the assignments and talking to your professors during their office hours can help ease the amount of work.
You have to take care of yourself when you are sick
GiphyIf you don't get sick during the semester, you must have a very amazing immune system. Sicknesses spread through a college campus like a fire. With the combination of all the germs and the stress, you are bound to get sick. Getting sick is hard enough, but then you add in the fact that you won't have your mom to take care of you.
College isn't cheap
GiphyI find myself looking at my bank account and wondering where all the money has gone. As much as I would like to just stop spending my money, my Venti iced coffee from Starbucks is the only thing keeping me awake after my 8 a.m.
Yes, there really is a Freshman 15
GiphyI thought that I would be able to make it through my first year without gaining the notorious "Freshman 15." Considering the fact that my diet at college has consisted of Pop-Tarts and Spaghetti-O's so far, I am pretty sure I will weigh more than before I moved in. It can be pretty difficult to eat healthy on campus, and you start to miss those home-cooked meals. Maybe choose a salad instead of pizza every once in a while.
Your roommate can either be amazing or horrible
GiphyComing into college, I was worried about having a roommate. I have heard so many roommate horror stories, and I didn't want to end up like that. Since moving in, my roommate and I have become very close. I enjoy our nightly routine of watching "Big Time Rush" and talking about how our day was. Hearing people complain about their roommate situation can be hard to listen to because that could have been me.
Partying isn't as fun as you think
GiphyBefore college, I thought that I would love going out on the weekends, but I have honestly found it exhausting. I have really enjoyed the late night trips to get milkshakes and the movie nights with my friends. Getting alcohol spilled down your back while aggravatingly loud music is playing isn't everyone's thing, and that's perfectly fine.
Being an adult is scaryÂ
GiphyHaving to make your own doctor's appointments and remember your Social Security number may not seem difficult...until you actually have to do it. I actually use a planner, which is something I thought I would never do.
The schoolwork, homesickness, and responsibility that comes along with college can easily creep up on anyone. While there have been struggles, I wouldn't trade my experiences at college for anything. The fun times I have been having are worth all of the hard times. I mean, college gets easier, right?
