Lessons Learned From Lizzie McGuire

When in doubt, simply think, "What Would Lizzie Do?"

Lessons Learned From Lizzie McGuire

People always say it's important to have role models, people to look up to and learn from. For me, one of those role models was Lizzie McGuire. From what to wear to school, to how to deal with the mean girl, Lizzie showed us how it's done:

1. Sometimes you just have to tell people what you want.

2. Best friends are important, don't ever leave home without them.

3. It’s important to be who you are no matter what, and to keep people around who aren't afraid to tell you that.

4. Fixing your hair is an art form. You can never have too many accessories or braids.

5. Moms can be cool too, especially when you need advice. Even though sometimes they can be embarrassing, they'll always be there when you need them.

6. Don’t ignore the dad in your life, otherwise he may feel neglected and seek you out.

7. Having a crush on the cutest boy in school. After all, who doesn't love Ethan Craft?

8. Being a klutz is cool. Embrace it when those moments are captured on film, you might as well preserve the embarrassment forever.

9. Sometimes the guy of your dreams has been there all along.

10. There will always be people who don’t like you. The ones who love to point out your every mistake. Who constantly make fun of you.

11. But just keep being you, and eventually you can win even the most difficult of people over.

12. If you get the chance to travel abroad, take it. Who knows, you may end up a superstar performing live in front of thousands of people with your pop-star look alike.

13. It’s important to have people who believe in you and who will always throw a dance party for you.

14. Little brothers can be a PAIN. They're annoying and they always ruin your life.

15. But they’re also secretly great and you wouldn't trade them in for the world.

Lizzie McGuire knew how to do life. It wasn't always easy, she fell on her face quite a bit, but she always got back up and kept fighting. She knew who mattered, and how to be a true friend. She wasn't always the perfect daughter, but at the end of the day she always knew she could turn to her mom or dad. Lizzie had fun and always looked ready to strut down the middle school cat walk. Even in college, I still find myself thinking, "What would lizzie do?" and she hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
