Lessons I Learned From Watching Over 24 Hours Of Property Brothers

Because every house should be an open concept, obviously.

Everyone has their TV addictions. Some watch "Scandal," some watch "Empire." I watch "Property Brothers." HGTV is like TV heaven to me. As such, when the "Property Brothers" marathons start, I just put on pajamas and get ready for the day because I don't plan on moving. Drew and Jonathan become my BFFs for the day. However, after watching that many episodes, you start to see the overall lessons that they're trying to get across about home buying.

1. The first house you see will ruin your life.

Drew has this really evil cute thing he likes to do where he finds everything you could ever dream of having in a house that is almost always twice the budget. While this entire process is super painful for both the home buyer and the viewer, it is kinda the only way they can get most of these couples on board with looking into a fixer-upper house. Which they aren't even renovating themselves, might I add?

2. Nothing goes as planned.

No matter how much contingency is set aside, or how terrible they think the house already may be, there is always something worse on the way. Whether it be water damage, asbestos, heating issues, or something else even more problematic—something will happen that no one expected.

3. Someone won't want to compromise.

Jonathan is really good at finding ways to save money when things go wrong. However, there is always one half of the couple that just cannot compromise whatever feature it is that Jonathan says could save them approximately $1,000 or more on their budget. Like, you do not need a wet bar in your living room, Phillip. But, because he is so great, Jonathan finds other ways to make it work.

4. Renovations will come down to the wire.

Most of these families have a very hard timeline to meet, as their lease will be up or they cannot afford both a mortgage and rent. However, with setbacks, most renovations get pushed back and barely make it or do not completely make it by the timeline. Which is stressful for everyone involved, including me.

5. The house will be gorgeous in the end.

No matter how much of a train wreck the house is when they start the project, Jonathan always makes the house absolutely beautiful. Like, I'm 99 percent sure that they aren't even in the same house it's so beautiful. The "Property Brothers" truly do magical things to fixer-uppers and I cannot wait—Oh, a new episode is coming on!

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
