When I asked people what recruitment taught them, these are some of the amazing responses that I received:
"I learned that girls from every walk of life are right for Greek life." -Mariah C.
"How to be myself, I've always considered myself a shy person and going through recruitment has taught me that I actually love to talk to people." -Katelin M.
"Small talk! Also how to talk about myself in a non-braggy way. So, I feel super prepared for job interviews." -Allison C.
"Going through recruitment each round I talk with a pnm: I'm reminded of another reason as to why I went (with my chapter) and why this chapter means so much to me. Recruitment has kind of helped me refresh my memory as to why I'm in recruitment and doing what I'm doing because finding a place like I have in (my chapter) is something I want everyone to have." -Christina H.
When I asked others who were a part of Greek life what they learned from recruitment, I received all types of responses. Whether it be something they learned about themselves or a skill that they acquired. Everyone gets something out of recruitment whether it is a sense of belonging, a boost of confidence, or skills that they will later use in the future.
I think that is one of the most important parts of recruitment: learning.
As a recruiter, I learned to give everyone a chance. Not everyone is going to look or act exactly like you and recruitment is an easy way to see that. It's important to remember that not everyone can be you and you can't be exactly like others. However, this doesn't mean that you can't be amazing sisters together.
As a pnm, I learned to be myself. It's easy to forget who you are when you are surrounded by so many people in college that you envy or look up to. However, in order to find the perfect home for you, you HAVE to be yourself. I learned to be confident in who I was, knowing that others would love the real version of me.
As a sister, I have learned that this is a time to truly appreciate your sisters. You are spending days together, trying to find sisters that will complete your chapter and sometimes you forget how to truly appreciate those around you. Recruitment is a time to appreciate your sisters and all they are doing for you whether it's a smile during line up, a hug when you're tired or letting you borrow their lipstick when yours begins to crack during the 7th or 8th round of talking to girls. Your sisters are there for you during this time and it's something that I think is extremely important to remember even when recruitment is over.
