When you think about it, how many 19 year old sorority girls do you know that would rather be in Texas with family bonding? Not many. As for me, that’s where I would kill to be rather than a party with friends.
Hunting has been a way of life for my family since I was a little girl, and even though I didn’t start the journey as soon as my brothers and cousins may have, my time came and I cant think of anything else that I would rather do on my breaks from school then spend time in Texas.
My last birthday, I got to experience one of the coolest things by going hunting with Kris and Amanda Helms. Many people may not know who they are, but to me they are apart of our family. Kris is the cameraman for Ted’s show and also the ranch manager at Spirit Wild Ranch. Amanda is his wife, who in my eyes is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.
On our hunting trip, I was able to learn more about hunting that I didn’t think I would ever know.
One lesson that Kris and Amanda taught me is that being in the woods is a blessing. When you think about it, how many people can say they went and sat in the deer blind waiting for 3-4 hours without service? Not many people can, nor would they want too. Being in the woods gives you an escape from the world as we know it, no Instagram no Snapchat just you and the animals.
As a hunter you begin to learn more and more about the world around you, not just the world inside of your cell phone. This is a lesson that many teenagers could use.
The last thing that you can learn as a hunter, you'll never have stronger bonds. When you spend that time alone you bond with nature in ways you couldn't expect, and when you spend that time with family you make ties that will never be broken.
