Lessons I Learned During My First Week Abroad

The first few days were a bit of a shock

Lessons I Learned During My First Week Abroad

I have the amazing privilege of spending the majority of my summer studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland. I've been abroad before, but never in such an independent way. I didn't know anyone else in my program, but I was excited to make new friends and explore an unfamiliar country. After being here for almost two weeks, I could not be more happy with my decision.

To be completely honest, there have been quite a few surprises and cultural differences I've had to get used to. Here are some of the most important lessons I had to learn in my first week:

1. Don't be quick to stereotype

One of the reasons I love being abroad is that I'm studying with people who are so different from me. We all come from different universities, backgrounds, states, religions, and stages of life. I was intimidated by these differences when I met everyone, but I quickly realized that we all had a lot more in common than I thought, and we learn so much from each other.

2. When in doubt, try it out

When you're in a new city or country, there are always going to be new things to try, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You might surprise yourself.

3. Be adventerous

Put the guide book down, ask locals for advice, and go off the beaten path. My favorite days so far have all been unplanned adventures that only happened because we decided to get lost and see what happened.

4. Try to assimilate

While doing all of the must-see tourist things, don't get caught up in the visitor mindset. Even if you're only abroad for a few weeks, immerse yourself in the culture.

5. Stay healthy

When every day feels like a vacation, it's easy to adopt a vacation diet. While eating out every night is a great way to experience the new culture, it's also a really easy way to undo months of healthy eating and exercise. Go for a run and explore your new home, and on your way back hit the grocery store and buy some veggies.

6. Don't over do it

I was guilty of this one. We ate out almost every meal for the first few days and stayed out late. By day five everyone was exhausted and needed a day off. Remember that you have time, you don't have to finish your abroad bucket list in your first week.

7. Budget

This goes along with staying healthy and over doing it. Make good choices when you can. If you know you're going out to dinner one night, try to make your own breakfast and lunch. You also don't have to buy everyone yo know a cheesy souvenir. Try to make a budget and stick with it.

I'm sure the weeks ahead will teach me even more about life, culture, independence, and myself.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
