19 Lessons I Learned At 19
Hannah Thurmond

As a 19 year old living in today's world, there are many lies that the enemy will throw at you. I have learned that it is my choice to believe them or let them roll of my shoulder. Allowing myself to be defined in Christ and not in the world, these are 19 lessons and truths that I have learned in the past 19 years.

1. You are beautiful.

Because you are created in the image of God and no body can ever tell you different.

2. Bring people and things into your life that bring you happiness.

Puppies, Friends, Puppies, Food, and More Puppies!

3. Friends are only there for a season.

People will hurt you, but they are what you needed for that time period.

4. You will replace those “friends” with people who will be there for you.

New friends are the best!!!

5. It is okay to cry.

Never think you are too old to cry. If you have that mindset, you are in for an awaking in college.

6. Get involved in something bigger than yourself.

Join that bible study or sorority. You will never know how big of an impact it will make in your life.

7. You will become friends with people you never talked to in high school.

Most of the people I talk or sit with in class are people I never spoke to in high school.

8. People’s opinion do NOT define who you are.

You might think that now, but you are not allowing yourself to be defined in Christ.

9. God has a plan!!

Jeremiah 29:11 (*insert mic drop here)

10. Spend time with your older family members because they will not always be there.

They have so much wisdom and they long until the next time they get to see you.

11. Talk to your mom because she wants to know what is going on in your life.

Tell her about school, your friends, and that you watched three seasons of The Office in one day.

12. Be a Daddy’s girl because he is the first man you ever loved.

Ask him to take you fishing. He loves you more than words can express.

13. Allow people to invest in your life.

Shout-out to my community group girls!!

14. Stay at home and have a lazy day when you needed.

Sometimes you just need to lay on the couch in your pajamas all day. No judgement here.

15. Your GPA does not define who you are.

You are more than what your grade says.

16. It is OKAY to not know what you want to be when you grow up.

I thought I wanted to be a nurse and NEWS FLASH, Jesus had another plan.

17. Make an impact where you live.

You do not have to go out of the country to make an impact. Find a local organization and volunteer there.

18. Do not worry about being single, God has you someone.

Learn to fully rely on God.

19. Forgive others.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
