Lessons Learned As A College Freshman

Graduating from high school and transitioning into college is one of the most exhilarating, exciting, and nerve-racking moments of your life. It’s a time when you get to explore who you are and it is a step closer to moving on with the rest of your life and chasing those big dreams. I have learned a lot of things in the last couple years of my college career, but these few things have really stuck with me.

1. You will miss your mom and dad.

No matter how far away you went to school, you will miss them more than ever. Whenever things don’t go as planned or you’re having a bad week, the only thing you’ll want to do is call your parents. Do it! They miss you just as much, and they love hearing from you.

2. You will lose some of your best friends from high school, but you will gain better ones.

I know, I know, it sucks. You’ve had these friends since kindergarten and you can’t imagine parting ways, but unfortunately it’s inevitable. You get so busy with your new lives that you start to drift apart without realizing it. The good part about this is that you find out who your true friends are. The true friends you will have in your life forever will still keep in touch with you and when you see each other again, it will be like you never parted ways.

3. Life is hard.

In high school you had it easy, believe it or not. Your mom did your laundry, your grandma always had something good in the fridge, and your biggest worry was making it from algebra to English in three minutes. College life is a constant struggle of finding clean pants and food that hasn’t expired. It’s exhausting!

4. Getting a B is A-okay.

If you’re anything like me, good grades came easy in high school, but I am telling you right now that you NEED to study in college, but getting a B isn’t as bad as it sounds. After your first year of college you’ll be praising C’s, I promise. After all, C’s get degrees… Right Mom?

5. The value of $5 goes up.

Do you know how many tacos $5 buys? Enough said.

6. Sleeping an extra hour is so much more important than looking cute for class.

Honestly, no one cares what you look like in college. Just make sure you have clothes on and you brush your teeth, and you’re golden!

Lastly, Just remember to have fun and be yourself! College is suppose to be some of the best times of your life, don’t take a single moment for granted!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
