Things I Learned In High School

High school can either be a dreaded experience or a great one. With these six things in the back of your head, it's sure to be a great one.

Things I Learned In High School

High school taught me many things not only educational, but about life. I’m here to share the most important things that I learned throughout my four years that guided me through my first year of college and will continue to guide me throughout life.

1. Who cares about what anyone thinks

People in high school (girls in specific) can be extremely judgemental. It seemed like people lived off of gossip and as long as the gossip wasn’t about them, they didn’t care what was said. However looking back on it, I now realize a lot of it was jealousy and insecurity. As long as you’re happy, who cares what anyone else thinks. They’re probably the ones missing out anyway.

2. People will come and go

I went through a lot of different friend groups throughout high school and made friends with tons of different people whether they were in my classes, on my team, or friends of friends. You’ll find that once you don’t have something in common with those people anymore, your friendship will slowly fade away. Don’t take it personally. You aren’t meant to stay friends with the hundreds of people you meet forever.

3. You find out who will always stand by your side and what you will look for in friendships

This one goes hand in hand with #1 and #2. Along with high school comes an unnecessary amount of drama that no one will even remember in a few months anyway. Throughout this drama though you’ll realize who was always there for you and who never really was.

4. You get out of life what you put into it

This applies not only to life, but also to school. If you work your butt off in your classes and also in sports, it will pay off. Maybe you won’t get a full scholarship to a college of your choice, but I promise you do get the experience. You get the gratifying feeling of accomplishing goals that you doubted at some point. And most importantly, you realize you can do anything you set your mind to.

5. Life goes on

This is something my mom told me all throughout high school and still tells me. No matter what happens, life keeps moving forward even if you don't. So, you have a choice. Move on and find happiness or sit and dwell on things that you’ll later realize were completely irrelevant.

6. Time goes by way too fast

I still remember the nerves I had the first day of freshmen year like it was a week ago. Or the excitement of going into senior year and planning out what my next four years would look like. My high school years went by with what felt like the blink of an eye, but I wouldn’t change a thing about them. Live everyday to the fullest because if you don’t, it’s a day of your life you can’t get back.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
