Lessons I Have Learned From My Dad
Sadie Plyler

Let’s be real, dads are pretty awesome. While I may knock heads with my dad (that is only due to the fact that we are way too similar), I can say whole-heartedly that I have strived to be most like him out of anyone in my life.

He has taught me how to value myself and how to dream for things that I would often think were out of my reach. He taught me how to get over huge fears I have in life which would hold me back from doing incredible things and he has inspired me to be a better version of the person I deem myself to be. He has been such a Godly example to me and has encouraged me to live a life like Jesus would live.

Aside from the incredible lessons of love and encouragement I have learned from my dad, I also learned some fantastic lessons about life and how to live that to the fullest. In life, I have learned that hard work is what will get you to where you need to go. No one is going to give you a handout, you must work for the things you want in order to achieve big goals and ensure success. Life is about getting a running headstart and gaining work experiences early and developing a hard work ethic which will take you far in life.

Another great life lesson I have learned from him is how to learn to appreciate and try new foods. While this may seem like a silly lesson I learned from him, it is one of my favorites. Through his endless nagging to convincing me to stop being a picky eater, I have experienced so many delicious and amazing things. I have experienced new cultures and I have found some new favorites. My dad has also taught me to have a sense of adventure and to not be afraid of things in life. I have been able to experience so many thrill-seeking events because of what my dad has shared with me. I also gained my love for travel through my dad, I love getting to see new places, faces, and views. Traveling with my dad has shaped some of my fondest memories from childhood.

I love being able to say that I am who I am and I believe what I believe is from what my dad taught me. He is truly a great example of what Christ called earthly fathers to be like. I know that even living six hours away, I can always call on him and he will be there to help me through whatever I need, much like if we call on God he will answer our prayers. I am blessed to share such a special bond with him and thank him for everything he taught me through my 18 years at home. Love you, Dad!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
