When was the last time you really went to the mountains?
I mean, really went?
Whether you trek or camp, mountain trips require quite a bit of information and prepping before their realization. The more prepared you are, the less the mountain will kick your ass. But either way, the wild will always keep you guessing, so extra knowledge is always a plus.
Respect nature and its natural course. Don't be fooled into thinking you know the direction and can take an off-road to your destination, no matter how experienced you might be. Always follow trail markings and maps. Respect animals' natural habitats and educate yourself on how to react in case of a sighting. In case of any emergency, people are always ready to respond if they know your whereabouts, so make sure you let someone know about your upcoming trip. Arrive before nightfall to have time for setting up before laying beneath the stars.
Trust yourself and listen to your instincts. Even though nature is superior, you can still trust yourself to decide the intensity of your experience. Don't overpack -- take only what you need. (Let's be real, you won't really use that while camping.) Pace yourself if hiking and be sure to rest for water breaks. If you feel too tired, stop to rest and if you feel uncomfortable, honor your body's reactions and turn back. There's no shame in slowly building up your potential.
Share the wild with fellow mountain lovers. Nature is for everyone to enjoy, which requires everyone's effort. If you are camping, make sure that everything you take is reusable or compostable. If not, collect and dispose of all trash. Leave your campsite clean and take everything you came with. Be aware of endangered flora in the area and don't pick or damage any of the flowers or trees.
If you can, unplug from your dearly beloved friend, technology. Often times you won't even have to because high altitudes and remote places will do that for you. While this may be a challenge, it is the best way to fully immerse yourself in nature and allow yourself to experience the various stimulation your senses will be picking up.
Now that you know these unspoken rules of the wild, all you need to do is lace up your hiking shoes and begin your outdoor adventure! Remember to prepare accordingly in order for your experience to be safe, relaxing and environmentally considerate.
