By far my favorite stories were Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Sleeping Beauty. They each had a lesson that impacted my life differently.
Snow Whites story had an old lady come by and give her an apple. The apple turned out to be poisoned but Snow White being naïve and trusting took the apple and ate it anyway causing her to fall into a deep sleep. Reading this made me realize that I need to be careful when taking things from strangers. Even though the candy from the nice old lady down the street seems like it could be harmless you never know what everyone’s true intentions are. You could get yourself into dangerous situations by taking things from someone you do not know that well. Now for the sake of little kids, they said that she had fallen into a deep sleep but in real life, the things you take could be poisonous enough to cause you great harm.
When it comes to the Little Mermaid I learned it is okay to want to have a different life than your parents. In the story, Ariel’s father is very concerned that she is so interested in the human world and does not want to stay in the water and take care of the kingdom. It worries him so much that it causes him to order her to stop collecting artifacts from broken down ships and swimming to the surface altogether. Her father saying this causes Ariel to be very upset and makes her want to get away from the water and be able to humans even more. Which leads her to make the deal with the witch.
I can relate to this because I am no stranger to butting heads with my parents specifically my mother. Somethings I decide to do may not be the smartest and might have put me in danger. Also, at times I think I know more about what is going on in life then she does but then I have to remember she has already lived through most of the situations I have been in and knows the outcomes could be very bad. In the end, she is just trying to do her best and look out for me like any good mother would.
Finally, Sleeping Beauty probably teaches the best lesson of them all. “Honesty is the best policy.” When Aurora, sleeping beauty, was born the kingdom had a little get together for people to come and get their blessings. Three fairies came and blessed the princess with beauty and song before the final fairy could give her a wish an evil fairy appeared. She curses the infant, saying she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sunset on her 16th birthday and die. To offset this curse the final fairy changes it to that she will fall into a deep sleep until she is awakened by true loves kiss. To protect the child the king and queen send her away to live with the fairies. They also collected all the spinning wheel, put them in the basement, and burned them with hopes to avoid the curse. But even doing this did not protect her. When she came back on her 16th birthday and wander downstairs a spinning wheel appeared anyway. She ended up pricking her finger and falling asleep just like the fairy had said. By the end of the story, however, she is wakened up by true loves kiss.
The lesson learned here is that she never knew why she was sent away or that she needed to stay away from the spinning wheels. If her parents would have just been honest and told her that she should not have been around them the whole situation could have been avoided. I can relate to this because there have been times where I have lied to my parents hoping to keep myself out of trouble but end up actually getting into more trouble when they find out the truth. The conversations always end up the same if I would have just told the truth in the first-place things would not have been as bad in the end. It is a lot easier to understand that and just come clean now because I have a grown-up and I have been more mature how about the decisions I make. I think about how it is going to affect me and my life now. Sometimes they still do not agree with what I do but I am glad that I was honest and just tell the truth about the things in the first place.
