As a first-time collegiate level cheerleader, I didn't know how important confidence would be. I came in as naive as anyone could be, completely surprising who I am now. During my first year, I learned so many things that shaped the athlete I am right now.
Confidence is key
Coming in not being confident in who I was or my abilities stunted my growth for a majority of football season. I thought coming in as naive as a girl could be would be okay. Becoming more confident in my abilities (and lack thereof occasionally) helped me improve on skills I didn't realize I had.
Practice makes perfect, literally
I can't stress it enough, practice literally can make you perfect. There is a such thing as perfection, especially in cheerleading. I'm not perfect when I cheer but I am getting there.
Listen to everyone
There will always be people who give you advice or constructive criticism in life. Listening and taking it into consideration will help you in the long run, whether you think they are right or wrong.
Smile, seriously!
Smiling is a HUGE part of being a cheerleader. You are the face of your school and there will be someone taking pictures during games and performances. I can count on one hand how many pictures were taken last year that I wasn't smiling in. Keeping a smile on my face makes for better candids and a lot better attitude.
Have a good attitude
Last year, attitudes were a huge issue. Having a good attitude helps with your mentality going into every game and practice. Attitudes are reflected in your face and body language a lot. Just be happy and you'll be okay.
The last year taught me things that I can't learn in a classroom. The friends I've made have also helped me with improving all of these things. Athletes have a lot on their plates so we need to take the lessons we're learning and apply them to the real world.
