In college its a known fact that science majors have a tough life, along with engineering, math, accounting, or business. I feel for them, I can't imagine all that they have to do. However, most people think that education majors have an easy life. I beg to differ!
Yes, we don't have to study for a lot of tests or quizzes, but what we do have to do is lesson plans! Lesson plans sound way easier than they actually are. Basically, a lesson plan is the outline of what the teacher will teach and how they will do it. Not too bad, right?
Well, don't forget to use all the new strategies that are best for learning like KAGAN and whole brain.
Don't forget to use the extension for the kids who are ahead of the game.
Don't forget to use remediation for the kids who are behind.
Don't forget to involve fun activities that get the students interested.
Don't forget to base your lesson off the standards and prep the students for standardized testing.
Oh, and script your lesson plan with every single word and question you will say to the students and what you expect them to say back.
Now, take into account every subject and lesson you have to teach. For an elementary teacher, you're looking at around four lesson plans per day. Sadly, especially for new teachers, this isn't a quick 10-minute thing. These can take hours upon hours to type up and make correct and then make sure that they are actually feasible in the class. Oh, and remember, if something goes wrong or your class doesn't understand the lesson, you have to redo all your plans and start over! Have fun!
I'm not trying to say that being an education major is harder than the other majors because honestly, I don't think that's true. However, I did want to put in perspective how much work it takes to be an education major and to be a teacher.
