Less Coffee, More Jesus

Fill me up.

Less Coffee, More Jesus
Haddie Erickson

I have a mug that I bought at the World Market that says, "Be Calm" on it. I usually use it for tea when I'm going to bed. There's another mug I have that says, "I literally can't" and this one is usually used for coffee in the morning. Both mugs do the exact same job, but I find myself contemplating which one to use more often than not. It makes sense. As I think about these mugs, and the deeper meanings I can give them, I think about what fills me up. I think about my mug. I think about how I choose to pour into people and how I let other people pour into me. I think about the people in my life that have poured into me for so long and I'm realizing how much they matter. We all have people in our lives that choose us. People that choose to know us, protect us and hold us in the ways they are capable of doing. God created us to be with Him and with each other.

Sometimes I choose the "Be Calm" mug, and I let those people in my life pour into me. I let myself feel loved and filled. I stay calm in knowing that those people in my life aren't going to let me down. I continue to be calm, pour into others and I let go.

Sometimes I choose the "I literally can't" mug, and I put up walls and guard myself. Sometimes we don't get to be calm. Sometimes I literally can't rely on the people I love to pour into me. Sometimes I literally can't be anything but empty.

The "I literally can't" mug is important. It teaches us whose we are. When we let anything but Christ fill us we will always, always, always run dry. We might be calm for a while, but change comes. People let us down. Being calm is different than being still and knowing the He is God. No matter which mug we choose each day, God is always with us. When people leave us, He never does. He is the only one that can fill us up.

John 4:13-14: "Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"

I have a river of living water that never will run dry. Even when I am empty and every part of me feels shaken, the Holy Spirit inside of me is unshakable. Choose to be filled with the Spirit, and He will save you. He will help you in all of your weaknesses. He is the only one that fills.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.
